I was saddened to hear of Rick's passing. My thoughts are with all of Rick's family, friends and many students he had over the years. I worked with Rick for a few years in the late '90's and learned a lot from him.

Rick was a great martial artist, and a great instructor. He was a good friend. I always admired his obsession for perfection, and his drive to be the best he could be. I now teach his kids martial arts, and I see in them, the eerie talent of both their parents shining through in them. I am sad that Rick will not be there on the days when our kids become Shodan, but I am sure he will be proud.

Rick was a great guy to cycle with. We all respected his great knowledge of the sport. Always encouraging. He'd call me "the sewing machine" . He had a kind word for everyone. Over several years, between sprints and rotations from the front to the back of the peloton I got to know bits and pieces of Rick's life.... his Air Force experience... the karate classes... his love for his children. At the end of each group ride as we headed back to the starting point, Rick veered off to his home in Plain City. He'd give everyone a fist bump and as we parted we'd yell "Rickyyyyy!" He was a swift cyclist but also enjoyed a more leisurely ride with Linda on the Heritage bike path. My wife and I would would encounter them while on our tandem and I'd always yell "Rickyyyy! I bet Linda always wondered what that was about. Our cycling group was stunned to hear the news, but we know that Rick cycles now without wind, rain, or friction and that he's having, as always a blast. He'll be greatly missed by all the gang.
