We are so sorry to hear of Dr. Mike's passing. Dr. Mike was influential in helping me start the Civility Club here at Hermantown High School in Duluth, MN. He even came to see and talk to me a couple years ago to encourage me to continue to keep up the good work! We will miss him dearly. Thank you for inspiring me to teach kids to give back, think positively, and build community. Prayers to the family.

I am so sorry for the loss of Dr.Mike. My thoughts and prayers have been with the family since I learned of his passing. I met him though the opportunity clinic/SADD program through my work in Phoenix, his daughter was also involved in this . He was just a light and was so excited for life and the future of programs. He had numerous ideas and was a great support to me as well as I was moving on and forward from my current position. I will so miss his laughter and jokes and just his willingness to work with others and share all his gifts. He will be so missed and I am so glad to have crossed his path.

My locker was next to Mike's all through High School. Yet, we truly became friends when I was working at a radio station in college and I happened to mention to Mike that I liked that Todd Rundgren guy. Well, the rest was history. My wife and I are deeply sorry for Mike's passing. As I look back, I remember what was written on the dinner napkins at one of my favorite weddings - "A Dream Goes On Forever." You are all in our prayers and we send our love. -Randy (Fritz) and Janice Terry

To The Thomson Family- I had the opportunity to talk with Dr. Mike the day before he passed away regarding his talk at my Caregiver Conference. I know from our conversation that he was compassionate, empathetic, and wanted to continue to make an incredible impact in people's lives. When death occurs in my life, Revelation 21:4 brings me comfort in times of sorrow and loss. "And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away." I hope that you will be reunited with Dr. Mike at Christ's second coming. Please let me know how to assist you at this difficult time. With Deepest Sympathy, Mary Elaine Petrucci

I met Mike in 1969 during the Lumberjack Festival in Hayward, WI. He was going into the 9th grade and I, 10th grade. We reconnected decades later when he was a keynote speaker at a conference I attended in New Mexico. Talk about a small world with our paths crossing. Later that summer, I arranged to have him be a keynote speaker at our administrators’ retreat in Santa Fe. He had people crying from laughter. Being raised in Superior, WI, I really laughed at his inside jokes that only someone from that area would get. What a kind hearted soul! He left such a positive mark in all of our lives. Condolences to his family. He will be sadly missed. ❤️🌹

Dear Carol, Christopher and Holly, A colleague told me of Mike's passing as we are out of state at a wedding. All I registered was shock at this terribly sad news. Mike and I went back so many years as he was the kickoff of our Drug and Alcohol Programming Programs in the Grandview Heights district and I was the counselor in charge. He held our audiences in his hands with his combination of excellent information, humor and good old common sense. He connected with kids and adults alike. I continue to reference his books on parenting, first with our own daughters and now with my granddaughter. I so appreciated his wisdom and advice. Please accept my deepest sympathy . We are all so sorry for your loss.

I'll always remember Mike (Nudist) speeding around delivering prescriptions in that tiny North Star Drug vehicle. (Was it a Hornet or a Gremlin?) I'm sure he met his future bride working there. To be with him was to laugh out loud. Carol I'll bet you could write a book about your life with him. I can't imagine anyone that met him would be the same again. My condolences to Mike's family -- you could not be with Mike and not hear him talk with obvious pride about his wife, children and grandchildren. I have known Mike since the 1980s when he presented his school athletics and his parenting programs at Hilliard High school where my children were students. He has been a tremendous help to me during times of personal loss when I needed someone to talk to, and most recently when I was again dealing with cancer, at the same time my daughter and sister were. His best attribute was the ability to listen. I have also worked with him professionally on a few projects over the years. I will miss you my friend.

Today I felt my heart ripped out as I got a call I wasn't expecting. I lost one of my best friends. Dr. Mike and I go back over 3 decades. We have traveled many miles together doing youth leadership and prevention work through SADD. He came to Arizona and spoke to our CASA volunteers and kids at our detention center. I went back east to visit family and he traveled hours to visit me. We talked routinely. We shared our professional dreams. We had planned on writing a book together when I retire in a couple years. Our connection was strong. Our friendship unbreakable. All those years ago, SADD's motto was "friends for life". And it holds true for Mike and I. My heart is broken. But it is also full. I am blessed to have known him, worked along side of him, felt his kindness, passion and friendship. Love you to the heavens and back. Donna McBride Casa Grande, Arizona

Dear Carol and the Thompson Family, The Bishop Hartley High School community is heartbroken to hear of Mike’s passing. Mike had a special connection with our staff & students. During all the times that Mike spoke to our kids and during the brief time that he actually worked inside our halls he exhibited such a kind, compassionate, and caring understanding. Mike had figured out what true success and happiness were and he always articulated that formula to members of our school community. Despite a very big personality Mike was a genuinely humble man. Our deepest condolences and may eternal rest grant unto him , O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, Rest In Peace. One of the greatest legacy's a person may leave upon leaving this world is to leave it better than he or she found it. In this regard Dr. Thomson's legacy has few parallels; however, to those who were blessed to interact with him his authentic and genuine care for the well being of young people was only surpassed by his love of his faith and family. Please know that the Saint Francis DeSales High School community hold Dr. Mike's family, friends and many associates in our prayers during this difficult time.
