George Walter, born on February 22, 1959 in Des Moines, IA, was called home to his heavenly father on April 22, 2022. George was raised in Marion, IN, where he met Ann Collins in the high school musical ensemble The 26th Street Singers. George and Ann married in 1982 and spent 39 years together, raising three children, Becky, DJ, and Sam. The family lived and grew in Unionville Center, OH, where George resided at the time of his passing.
George had a bellowing laugh and a sense of joy and good humor. He enjoyed good food and good drink. He could often be found working in his woodshop, where he created furniture, cutting boards, and toys for his grandchildren. He was unrecognizable without a cigar in his mouth and a glass of whiskey in his hand, both of which he shared generously with friends and family, especially the “Village Council.” His most peaceful evenings were spent partaking in the aforementioned vices while throwing a ball an infinite number of times to his beloved border collie, Lodi.
George was adept at finding joy in life. He loved to golf and ride his motorcycle. Each summer, he uncannily knew the exact time and place to find the best sweet corn, and would contentedly spend hours by his smoker creating the perfect barbeque to accompany it. He was happy to trounce opponents in a round of euchre or hearts, and claims to have sometimes won at poker nights with “the boys.”
George spent a 30+ year career in the field of IT, and upon his retirement, continued to share his skills with others by teaching at Columbus State Community College. He also drove a school bus for the Fairbanks Schools, and greatly enjoyed traveling with the school teams to away games and greeting students on their morning bus routes when their regular driver was out sick.
More than anything, George loved spending time with his four grandchildren. He was equally comfortable holding a crying baby, playing dress-up or monster trucks, or giving rides in a yellow wagon hooked up to the back of his tractor. He took his grandchildren out to early breakfasts at the Waffle House, allowed himself to be conned into buying them candy and toys, and let them “help” in the woodshop. His caring, patience, and adoration for his grandchildren was evident in the rich relationships he shared with each of them as individuals.
George is survived by his wife, Ann Walter, his daughter Rebecca Walter, his son Daniel Walter and daughter-in-law Julie Walter, and his son Samuel Walter and daughter-in-law Ashley Walter; his grandchildren Claire, Fox, Cyd, and Van; and his siblings Daniel Walter, Thomas Walter, Kathy Feltz, and Cindy Kohlmorgen.
The family will receive visitors for the viewing on Wednesday, April 27 from 9:30am-11:00am at St. Joseph Catholic Church (140 West Ave, Plain City) with a funeral service beginning at 11:00am Wednesday.
